Not much different to hiring particular hardware when you need it. East West Play comes to mind, and Pro-Tools is now in this category for me too. Ultimately, personally speaking, subscriptions / rentals that I find useful are the ones where I don't need the tools the whole time at all, and I can dip in when I need them and go without them at other times.

I sometimes feel that our love for tools exceeds our love for music. Who, aside from an all accommodating pro studio facility perhaps, actually needs all of these tools? Do you really need all of the UAD plugs? With all of these subscriptions being offered, Kush, Slate, Pro-Tools, Play, McDsp etc it gets to a point where owning only exactly what you actually need makes more sense.

)Īs long as they don't become sale shy after offering a subscription service, or change the demo system, I don't mind. (Maybe this isn't such a good idea after all. Sooner or later, they still get our money. They could even drop a 'renters' coupon in our account to go against future purchases. (Then we'd probably end up buying the plugs anyway! ) Might make Uaudio some coin in-between sales. What might be cool is if we could choose to 'rent' a bundle of say 5-10 plugs for 30-60 days, for a fee of say $30-50 dollars perhaps. They manage a timer on the demos, I'm sure they could manage it technically speaking. As a means to get me through particular projects for a relatively short time.

If I were new to the game though, a subscription would be great stuff. Most of us don't want a subscription, probably because we've already invested knee deep in the plug-ins!
